40 Mil facelift for city cathedral

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Port of Spain is to undergo a $30-$40 million restoration and renovation, Archbishop Edward Gilbert has said. Gilbert, the head of the Roman Catholic church here, gave details of the plan in his weekly column in the Catholic News on the weekend. He said the decision was guided by the ’substantial support for the renovation/restoration project of the cathedral where it presently stands’.

Home owners in T&T have already begun using concrete blocks that have been partially made from newspapers. Sitting in his home in Germany in 2007, Tobago-born Lorenzo Smith, managing director, Lo Smith Marketing Ltd, got the idea of using recycled materials to make blocks. Up to that time, Smith, who has experience in the hotel industry, had no experience in the construction field. “I lived in Germany for 18 years, and one day in Germany, I sat thinking, what can I do back at home with all the waste newspapers we throw away on a daily basis. “In 2007, I came home and took my mother’s blender and started experimenting with how I could use the paper. I didn’t know what to do with the pulp. Then I decided to mix the paper with concrete because it was flaking when they were used together. I then used other chemicals and the blocks started to gather mould.
