You are a true Trini when you know what it means to go “down the islands”. Trinidadians have a great affinity for this small group of islands scattered off the north-west peninsula. The islands; Chacachacare, Monos, Huevos, Gaspar Grande and tiny Gasparillo all act as a sort of barrier separating Trinidadian waters from the neighbouring Venezuela

Of the five islands Monos and Gaspar Grande or Gasparee as it is affectionately known, are the most populated. Of course, the term ‘populated’ is used loosely here, because these islands are used mainly as a site for leisure and pleasure. Those who can afford to invest in a vacation home often choose to look down the islands because it offers the promise of a quick source of relaxation, as all of the islands are just a short boat ride away.

Most of the homes built on the island have been passed down from one generation to the next, but there is still a stock of homes to choose from. When you start looking you may be surprised that you can also find a wide variety of styles and amenities in the different island homes. Some come fully equipped with private jetties and large outdoor patios that are perfect for taking in the sun and entertaining while just on the water’s edge. Others are more modest, especially on Gasper Grande where some of the homes are actually tucked further into the island mass.

If you are in the market for a vacation home and you are considering down the islands there are a few things you should consider.

Maintenance Costs
Buying a property down the islands is not cheap, but don’t think that the cost ends with your mortgage. Maintaining a home in this area is more expensive primarily because they are on the water and this exposes the home to more wear and tear, but also because you need to add the cost of bringing maintenance services to the island. In addition to repairs you may choose to employ a caretaker to protect your investment when you are away and this brings another addtional expense.

Access to the Property
While you can hire a boat to take you to your new property, most down-the-islands home owners have access to a family boat, just because it is that much easier to move to and from. Once you solve the access to the island the property may lay a distance from the port or high on a ridge that may require additional transport or hands to get to the home. The addition of these must be thoguht of as a worthwile endeavour to really enjoy your down the islands experience.

Buying to Rent or for Family Use
A house down the islands can be relaxing family getaway, but it can also be a smart investment. Many locals rent these homes for long weekends or during the school vacations but they can also be marketed to tourists as an exotic private villa.

Prices of homes down the islands vary wildly, again because there are many factors that contribute to the final value. To find out what is available you should contact a real estate agent for more information.
